Washington D.C. location is preferred, but we are open to candidates in other U.S. locations.\u00a0 The Head of U.S. Policy will report to FLI&#8217;s Director of Policy.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>FLI works to reduce catastrophic risks from transformative technologies and to develop optimistic yet realistic visions of the future. Our U.S. Policy team advocates for the adoption of forward-thinking AI policy at the state and federal levels.<\/p>\n<p>n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>As Head of U.S. policy, you will:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead and grow our U.S. Policy team<\/li>\n<li>Develop and execute a policy strategy on how the U.S. can best navigate the current race to build Artificial General Intelligence<\/li>\n<li>Promote the adoption of future-proofed AI policy at the federal and state level, including mitigation of convergence risk (AI + bio and AI + nuclear)<\/li>\n<li>Build coalitions with other nonprofits, businesses and academics working on issues relevant to our mission<\/li>\n<li>Develop informational materials, conduct educational briefings to explain complex AI policy issues to non-expert audiences and represent FLI in the media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Required qualifications:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advanced degree (Masters equivalent or higher) in policy, law, or a technical field related to emerging technologies<\/li>\n<li>Five or more years of relevant work experience, mid-career and senior candidates encouraged to apply<\/li>\n<li>A detailed understanding of the challenges that artificial general intelligence may pose to society<\/li>\n<li>Strong self-direction, proactivity, and work ethic <\/li>\n<li>Comfortable working remotely and independently a significant portion of the time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Preferred qualifications:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience managing high-performing teams<\/li>\n<li>Direct experience working for or advocating to legislatures and high-level civil servants at the state or federal level<\/li>\n<li>Advanced knowledge of the policy making process, including legislative procedures and opportunities for intervention\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of the technical capabilities and limitations of AI systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>n<\/p>\n<div>$150,000 &#8211; $250,000 a year<\/div>\n<p><small><\/small><\/p>\n<div>Compensation will vary depending on experience and geography.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Additional benefits include 24 days of vacation per year, health insurance, paid parental leave, co-working space allowance, and a work from home allowance for the purchase of office supplies or equipment.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>n<\/p>\n<p><span>Application process\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Please upload your resume. The letter has been signed by more than 30,000 people, including Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Yuval Noah Harari, and Andrew Yang.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/ai-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Asilomar AI Principles<\/a>, one of the earliest and most influential sets of AI governance principles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Testimony to the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/ai-policy\/written-statement-of-dr-max-tegmark-to-the-ai-insight-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\">US Senate AI Insight Forum on Innovation<\/a>, and the first civil society presentation to the US House of Representatives Taskforce on AI, encouraging policies that mitigate catastrophic risks from AI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Participation in the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/aisi\/artificial-intelligence-safety-institute-consortium-aisic\" target=\"_blank\">US AI Safety Institute Consortium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/video\/slaughterbots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slaughterbots<\/a>, a viral video campaign raising awareness about the dangers of lethal autonomous weapons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/project\/future-of-life-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future of Life Award<\/a>, which retrospectively awards unsung heroes who made the world a better place. Past winners include individuals who prevented nuclear wars, helped to eradicate smallpox, and solved the ozone crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"postings-link\" href=\"http:\/\/worldbuild.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Worldbuild.ai<\/a>, which imagines flourishing futures with strong AI and works out how to get there.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>FLI is a largely virtual organization, with a team of 25 distributed across Europe and the US.
